OWSI is where you cross from assisting to teaching. The course covers everything an Instructor needs to certify divers independently: standards, diver-safety procedures, classroom and confined-water teaching, open-water teaching presentations, dive theory, and the practical side of running a course from briefing through certification paperwork. Knowledge development is heavier than at any earlier stage. So is the in-water workload. The format mirrors what the IE will assess.
The Instructor Examination is the gate. It's a two-day evaluation run by trained PADI Instructor Examiners, separate from the IDC and with its own fee. The IE tests teaching ability, dive theory, demonstrated skill level, knowledge of the PADI system, and professional conduct. The standard is the same worldwide so a PADI Instructor certified in one country is recognised in another. Only candidates who meet the IE's performance requirements earn the rating.
To enrol in the OWSI you must hold the PADI Assistant Instructor rating (the first half of the IDC) and have completed both within the previous 12 months. Candidates with instructor ratings from other recognised dive training organisations may be eligible to enrol directly in OWSI without taking the AI section first. You also need an Emergency First Response Instructor rating, which can be earned during instructor training rather than beforehand.

The recreational specialty for diving below 18 metres, down to the 40-metre recreational limit. It covers gas planning, narcosis, and the buddy and safety procedures that change at depth.

A citizen-science specialty. You learn how to survey, collect, identify and report marine debris during a dive, and how to contribute the data to PADI AWARE Foundation's global database. Two to four hours of eLearning plus one supervised survey dive. The collected data feeds real conservation reporting, not just a feel-good gesture.

A specialty for diving in currents. You let the water do the work and cover more ground with less effort. The course covers how to plan a drift, how to stay together as a group, what surface signalling looks like, and what to do when the current strengthens or weakens unexpectedly mid-dive.

A first aid and CPR course focused on infants (under 1) and children (1 to puberty). Covers the specific techniques and adjustments needed when the patient is small: gentler chest compressions, smaller breaths, choking response, and the most common childhood injuries and illnesses. No diving prerequisite. Open to anyone who wants the training.

The specialty that lets you dive with nitrox: enriched-air mixes containing more oxygen and less nitrogen than ordinary air. Less nitrogen absorbed means longer no-decompression limits at depth and shorter required surface intervals. It's PADI's most popular specialty and is often done in a single day.
