Past about 40 metres, air becomes problematic. Nitrogen narcosis impairs judgment. Past about 56 metres, oxygen partial pressures in air enter the toxic range. Trimix solves both. By blending helium into the mix, the partial pressures of oxygen and nitrogen drop to safe levels even at extreme depth. The trade-off is decompression complexity. Multiple gas mixes are carried, each used at a specific depth range, with planned switches during ascent and dedicated stop times at each switch depth.
The course is technically and physically demanding. You manage multigas dive computers. You carry up to four additional cylinders beyond your back-gas. You execute precise gas switches at specific depths. You hit your decompression stops to the minute, because exceeding them by a small margin at this depth carries real consequences. Each dive plan accounts for contingencies (lost gas, failed computer, missed stop), and the candidate must demonstrate the response to each on training dives before the certification is signed off.
This is not an entry rating. Prerequisites are heavy. Tec 50 Diver (or qualifying equivalent), substantial logged tec experience, medical sign-off, and an honest assessment of whether the candidate has the temperament for dives where small mistakes compound. Many candidates spend years between Tec 50 and Trimix, building experience on shorter tec dives before committing to the depth, the gas cost, and the time investment.
