PADI Divemaster Course

The first professional-level diving qualification. It certifies you to supervise dive activities, guide certified divers, and assist instructors during training.

2 weeks

The Instructor Development Course is the step from working in diving to teaching it. Where the Divemaster rating qualifies you to guide and assist, this course prepares you to run courses of your own — to stand in front of students, deliver the standards, and take responsibility for certifying them.

It runs over roughly two weeks and is intensive. You'll cover how people learn, how to structure and present both classroom and in-water lessons, how to manage risk as the person in charge, and the business and ethical side of being an instructor. A lot of the time is spent practising teaching itself, with feedback, rather than being taught at. The course prepares you for a separate independent evaluation, which is what actually issues the rating.

The prerequisites reflect how far along this is: a PADI Divemaster certification, at least 100 logged dives, a current Emergency First Response certification within the last 24 months, and a minimum age of 18. By this stage most candidates have been diving regularly for years, and that depth of experience is part of what the course builds on.
